Speed-read — Week 3
This week is about masking, shame and emotional intensity.
Recognise: Notice what mask you may have been wearing.
Acknowledge: Name what the mask has protected you from and what it has cost.
Understand: How ADHD patterns can contribute to emotional intensity, perceived criticism or rejection feeling intense, shame and overcompensation.
Move Forward: Choose one small unmasking experiment.
Your milestone: identify one mask, one shame story and one emotional pattern you are ready to notice differently.
Masking can become automatic. It may look like being capable, funny, quiet, easygoing, overprepared, helpful, agreeable or constantly fine.
Start by noticing the role you often play. What do people expect from you? What do you hide? Where do you feel most exhausted after performing?
Workbook prompt
What mask feels most familiar to you?
The mask may have protected you. It may also have cost you energy, honesty, rest, self-trust or connection.
Both can be true. Do not shame the mask. It may have helped you get through. Now you get to ask whether it still needs to do all that work.
Workbook prompt
What has this mask protected you from, and what has it cost?
Shame can grow from years of being misunderstood. ADHD-related difficulties can be misread as laziness, drama, carelessness, selfishness or lack of effort.
A more accurate story might include executive functioning, emotional intensity, overwhelm, perceived criticism or rejection feeling intense, sensory load or lack of support.
Accurate does not mean excused. Accurate means useful.
Workbook prompt
What shame story are you ready to question?
Unmasking does not need to be dramatic. Choose one small moment where you can be a little more honest or better supported.
Examples: ask for written details, say no with fewer explanations, take a pause before replying, use a timer without apologising, tell someone safe what helps you process. Tiny counts.
Workbook prompt
What is one small unmasking experiment you could try safely?
